Punta Chivato is a well-protected anchorage about mid-way
between Mulege and Santa Rosalia. Approaching from the south
is fairly easy, as the Punta Chivato Resort is visible from a
good distance off. We have entered the anchorage at night, and
the lights of the hotel were there to guide us in. The only
danger is the low-lying Islas Santa Inez. They do have light
towers on them that generally are working, but it isn't
advisable to try and pass between them as they separated by
sandy shoals and an reef, which is covered at high tide.
Approaching from the north, there is a light at Punta Chivato,
then another at Punta Cerotito. Its sandy bluff distinguishes
this narrow outcropping of land during the daytime. After
passing this, the Punta Chivato Resort once again becomes easy
to spot. From this approach, it is best to keep the Islas
Santa Inez to port.
Each time we have visited this area we have
seen an abundance of dolphins. The water is clear and
beautiful. The beach here at Chivato is also one of the best
shelling beaches we've visited. The children collected more
shells here than all of us could carry! The coast is lined
with large, beautiful homes, as well as an airstrip for small
planes. Several of the houses have their own planes. There is
a dinghy dock at the hotel, which we have yet to visit.
